I have enjoyed pageflakes as a way to personalize my own homepage. Although there are still many things that I still want to explore with pageflakes and create I have got a pretty good start on the creation of two pages. I have created a personal pageflake with my facebook, twitter, CNN and post it note. My second page is specifically for school. On this page I have reminders for my students about the new school year. I have an introduction to first grade, school supply list as well as a picture of myself. I hope to learn to update both of these pages more throughout the school year.

Simon and Lawless discuss literacy in the classroom that moves beyond the text –based instruction to include different media sources. Teachers must begin to design their curriculum to assist students in questioning, interacting with different media while communicating with an audience beyond the classroom. I use to think like the teacher in the article who allowed her students to type their spelling words. However, this approach to teaching (if it is that) is so shallow. Children need to experience other literacy’s. They need to broaden their horizons in order to broaden their perspectives of ways to learn. Teachers need to learn how to teach subjects in “conjunction” with technologies. The use of technology to aid in teaching takes the learning process one step further and provides that out of the box learning experience. Children are asked to think critically and teachers have to think critically as well in order to create curriculum that provides this opportunity. I want to be this teacher for my students.

this technology class is a good start for me to have the ability to challenge my students with a new form of literacy. It causes me as the educator to come out of my comfort zone and design something worth learning about. After all, I do teach tomorrow why not use 21st century materials.

I created a video about community helpers using Windows Movie Maker. Personally I do not like the program I think it is too complicated to learn. Of course I would not allow 1st graders to try to create things with movie maker because I think it would be too difficult. I do plan to show my students my short video clip about community helpers. I would also like to take a video of introducing myself and upload it to my webpage through my county.

Foshay discusses the benefits of allowing students to create digital video. It allows students to be more confident because of what they are creating. Creating these videos are motivating and can serve as an assessment of what a student has learned about a certain subject.

Although I don’t feel confident enough in allowing my students to conduct a digital video and go throught the editing process because I teach first grade. I believe there are easy ways that can serve the same purpose while engaging my students such as the digital texts or even pocasting. I do believe that older kids could enjoy this and really be motivated by this type of experience.

I loved using photo story and Animoto. I can see many possible ways to implement these two multimedia applications into my class of first graders. My Photostory was on plant poetry that my first graders completed last year. I plan to use this photo story to show my children before we embark on learning about plants and writing poems in cooperative learning groups. I feel that it will be a great way to show the children what other classes have done.

For me Animoto was extremely easy. I uploaded pictures of different Eric Carle books and then chose music to go with it. Animoto along with photo story also allows you to add text to your creation.

I plan to allow my students in the upcoming year to use digital cameras (I want to set up an account on donors choose to obtain money to purchase a class set). The possibilities of how they can work in groups to create stories with photos they take are endless. Students can take pictures at home, on field trips, of their classmates, the school as well as school staff. I feel that students will be excited and motivated to complete a task such as this using technology.

I believe that Kim and Kamil are correct in that digital texts are a necessity in today’s society. In just 6 years I am amazed at how much has changed in the world of searching, researching and reading for information. During my undergrad I remember going to the library and sitting for hours reading and writing. Since being in graduate school I have discovered a whole new world of taking notes and writing. My laptop allows me to read, highlight take notes look up definitions. I can recieve and retrieve articles online without even printing them off. It is wonderful. With digital texts there are some drawbacks. As a first grade teacher I have to be careful in selecting any type of website for my children to “read” or explore. Most of the websites are above their level. I remember getting so frustrated with websites such as yahooligans, national geogprahic etc because my students would be conducting research about a certain animal but the information that they recieved on a kid friendly site was way above their reading level. Kim and Kamil states that digital texts are harder to read because readers see hyperlinks, advertisements, media etc on the pages which cause distractions. I have personally found this to be true when reading things on the site wikipedia. I always find myself clicking the hyperlinks instead of continuing to read the page. Kim and Kamil also state that 79% of readers just scan instead of actually reading the article. I also see myself doing this. I think that because I am such a traditional reader (books and hardcopies) reading digital texts is something that I have not become accustomed to. However with time I think it would get easier and is MUCH better for our environment.

When thinking of my class and younger children they often have track print. Teachers would have to instruct their children in a different way such as tracking print with a mouse. If the end of grade test are going to children reading selections digitally then children need practice. They need texts that are on their level and that prepares them for a computer based EOG. I personally am a bad test taker. I get extremely anxious over tests. I have always made good grades but never on major tests (SAT, PRAXIS, GRE, MAT) As this type of person I know that we should offer all children the ability to take these EOG’s via digitially or traditionally.

I plan to begin my children this year with tarheelreader. I have already shared this site via email with my first grade team. I think it is wonderful for beginning readers.

I LOVE trackingstar4teachers! In undergrad I had to create several webquests and hated it! I always think back to that experience and cringe. Why? Because it was soooo time consuming. However using trackingstar was so easy. Frye’s article stated that webquest are inquiry based. Webquest allows students to think critically. Leu states that there are several things to keep in mind when completing a inquiry based project for students. 1. Locate child friendly sites. (I found Ivyjoy to be helpful) 2. Plan Research Activities have several goals in mind that you want students to accomplish. Webquest allows students to complete a task in a new way rather than a traditional project.

I hope to use the webquest that I created on trackingstar4teachers when I teach my first graders about plants. I also plan on teaching this website to my colleagues and hopefully together we can create many of these webquest to meet our standards in science as well as other subjects while keeping the students engaged.

Skype is hip! It is a great free way that can motivate and engage children. Just this year we had someone from our church read to a group of students via Skype. Skype is a great tool that can be used at any level in the school setting why? Skype can aid administrators through video conferencing. Teachers can interact with individuals across the seas and provide unlimited opportunities for their students. For example a teacher can set up a collboration with another school in another country, state, etc. These students can share with your students things that they are learning or what their climate is like, etc. Then students can write about what they have learned and share with thier out of country friends.

Recently I read an article in a teacher magazine of how a teacher in Alaska used Skype to teach her students who could not get to school because of weather conditions. This was a great way to continue class despite mother nature. However, many people would argue that not all students may have internet connection and there is so much said about the face to face learning experience that children recieve. Some educators are afraid that this might or could be what education could go to. However, I believe that we should use a tool such as this to enhance our students experiences.

One way I would like to use skype in the classroom is with a friend in a neighboring county. I would like for her third grade students to read books to our first grade class and create a buddy system. I have also thought of using skype for field trips. So much funding has been cut back for field trips. This would be an awesome way to “take” students places that we can not afford to go.

Social bookmarks could aid students, teachers and provide collaboration in the classroom. As a first grade teacher I have been the madwoman the article,Forbes talks about trying to help her students type in a URL. Having a bookmark for students to utilize is a great and efficient way for students use the sites that I want them to explore.

Social bookmarking is a great way to collaborate with anyone. I can think of many ways my husband could be using this with his clients as they are choosing things for their house. They could create bookmarks for him to look at certain styles and he could share bookmarks of products that he thinks would work out for them. Often he emails sites to clients.

As an educator I am often sharing websites that I find helpful or interesting. Even our technology gurus are emailing lists of websites and pages that we can use in the classroom. Social bookmarking is a much easier way to collaborate helpful sites and places to find information.

I plan to use social bookmarking and begin setting it up on my classroom computers as soon as school begins. I have several different websites that I want my students to go to as part of a center and this would be an easy way to help them.

After reading Morgan’s article about children using chat rooms and threaded discussions to enhance their argumenative writing abilities I see positives and negatives in allowing children to participate in threaded discussions. Several pros that I see in allowing children to participate in a threaded discussion would be that it forces the writers to think on their feet when they are writing. When a student takes a position on a certain topic then they have to provide answers to questions as well as provide mutliple reasons for their perspective. Students have an immediate audience when they are discussing in threaded discussions or chat rooms. Like Morgan states students feel that the ability to argue or to “not agree” is the same as “fight” or associate a negative conotation with arguing. However students need to learn the lesson that it is ok to disagree.

As children write or provide points for their arguments they have to take consideration of their readers position. Traditional debate through writing a paper that was read only by a teacher or sitting in on a discussion in class doesn’t allow readers to revisit the discussion. Through discussion boards readers can return to what the writer said and what the person after them said on a particular topic.

Threaded discussion boards would be a great way to see what students think about a certain book or class project. For example I was thinking of creating a discussion board for my class later in the year (possibly after Christmas) and posting a certain book that we have shared. Next allowing students to post their comments about the book. I think we could conduct literature circles through discussion threads as well. This past year we created poems about various plants. As a closing project I could allow the various groups to share how they felt about one another poems.

The negative aspect that I see of discussion boards is that as students “argue” or present their feelings they are not face to face with who they are talking to therefore not enhancing eye contact, public speaking skills or confidence in speaking to a group and debating.

Twitter reminds me of IM. I remember using IM at Lenoir Rhyne to send instant messages to my friends about going to dinner, library or just out. Twitter reminds me of that except it allows you to put a picture with your messages.
